Interview with David
September 2, 2024Interview with Jens Schuermans, winner Rwandan Epic 2022
Winner of Rwandan Epic 2022 could not wait to get back to the country of 1000 hills to end his successful season of MTB racing. We ask him some questions
" I have incredible memories from my participation in 2022 "
1. Who are you, Jens Schuermans?
My name is Jens (30), I’m a Belgian professional mountainbiker who discovered this beautiful sport about 15 years ago and turned this passion into my profession 10 years ago. I would describe myself as a positive minded person who is determined to achieve his goals and enjoy the process along the way
2. Why did you decide to come back to Rwanda and take part in your second Rwandan Epic?
Last year I discovered Rwanda and I found a heartwarming country that got into my heart because of it’s people and nature. I have incredible memories from my participation in 2022 and I’m looking to make more impressions and meet more people during my visit in 2023!
3. What makes Rwanda special to you?
I was impressed by the warm and welcoming people and how well structured this country is. The nature is second to none and I love how diverse the landscapes are that we encounter along the route of the Rwandan epic
4. Describe one of your best memories of the 2023 Rwandan Epic.
My memorie that pops up directly was during the first stage when we passed one of the first villages. After a fast descent, we entered the center and I was overwhelmed by home many people were watching the race, how supportive they were towards the cyclist and how enthousiast they were encouraging us. I was mindblown and it gave me goosebumps! It was a good impression of what was still to come later that day and the race but that first moment always stays in your head!
5. As ambassador of the Rwandan Epic, what would you like to say to our 2023 participants less than 2 months before the event?
Make sure to come to this country with a mindset to be open to discover Rwanda to have the true experience during this beautiful stage race and your time in the country. Make time to meet the people and let the culture in this country touch you. The race will be tough with a lot of climbing and high altitude but your efforts will be rewarded with beautiful trails and amazing views! Use the time till the race to train well so you can enjoy this experience to the fullest!
